Jos: The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Shaya, has announced that the university lost two of its students during the recent unrest in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau. This disclosure was made during a news conference held in Jos.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the incident took place on March 29, when gunmen attacked the Angwan Rukuba community, resulting in several casualties and injuries. This community is known for housing numerous staff and students of the university. In response to the violence, the State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew, but the unrest spread to other areas once the curfew was relaxed on April 1.
Prof. Shaya reported that, in addition to the two fatalities, four other students and one staff member were injured and are currently receiving medical treatment. The deceased students were identified as Abel Gershon, a 300-level student from the Building Department, and Adeyomo Temitope, a 500-level student from the Quantity Survey Department. Gershon succumbed to his injuries on April 5 after being shot in the stomach, while Temitope was killed by hoodlums on Bauchi Road on April 1.
The vice chancellor expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and confirmed that those in the hospital are responding to treatment. Despite the unrest, he assured that the university would resume on April 13, with enhanced security measures in place to protect the university and its surrounding communities. He emphasized the safety of the university’s campuses and urged parents and guardians to encourage their wards to return for exams and the start of the second semester.
