Abuja: Vice-Chancellor of University of Abuja, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, has emphasized the importance of discipline, determination, and commitment to excellence to the newly-admitted students during the matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Fawehinmi addressed the 8,000 students, urging them to see themselves as ambassadors of the institution, now known as Yakubu Gowon University. He stressed that their conduct would be closely monitored and that the university upholds a zero-tolerance policy against indiscipline, including cultism, examination misconduct, sexual harassment, and drug abuse. Students were reminded to adhere to their matriculation oath and maintain law-abiding conduct, with violators facing appropriate sanctions.
The vice-chancellor further advised the students to focus on their studies, highlighting that the certificates awarded at the end of their programs would reflect both character and learning. He reassured them of the university’s commitment to support and guide them, offering opportunities, facilities, and mentorship to help their talents and aspirations flourish. However, he emphasized that their success ultimately depends on their own discipline and dedication.
Fawehinmi revealed that over 30,000 candidates applied for admission, but only 8,000 were selected due to capacity constraints and the university’s commitment to quality. He congratulated the students for being part of this competitive selection, acknowledging their potential to excel in an intellectually-stimulating environment.
He encouraged students to cultivate a culture of collaboration, mutual respect, and discipline, making wise decisions and utilizing available academic, counseling, health, and welfare services. Fawehinmi also noted ongoing efforts to enhance ICT infrastructure and improve internet access, as well as initiatives to address hostel accommodation challenges through partnerships with agencies like TETFund.
The vice-chancellor urged staff to serve as role models, treating students with respect and compassion. He expressed gratitude to parents and guardians for entrusting their children to the university, assuring them of their wards’ safety and the institution’s open-door policy.
One of the matriculating students, Miss Favour Cyprian, expressed her happiness and commitment to staying focused during her academic journey. The ceremony concluded with the administration of the matriculation oath by the acting Registrar, Malam Mohammed Sambo.
