Post: Wike Challenges PDP Candidates to Struggle for Power in 2027 Elections

Abuja: Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged candidates contesting in the 2027 general elections under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to prepare themselves for a struggle to gain power. Wike, a notable leader within the PDP, made these remarks during the party’s 109th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Wike emphasized the necessity of fighting for power, stating, “Nobody gives power. Nobody has done it. Power is taken; if you did not do so, it’s your business.” He advised candidates, particularly those pursuing governorship positions, to expect rigorous contests. Wike reflected on his own political journey, highlighting how he became governor despite challenges, including running against an incumbent from a different party.

Wike criticized the prevalent “food is ready” politics, where individuals expect to benefit without effort. He urged party members to brace for life’s challenges and emphasized that success often follows struggle. He recalled his experience running for a local government chairmanship, a contest that reached the Supreme Court, to illustrate the importance of perseverance.

He reminded PDP members that when the party was in power, many relied on it like dependent children. Now, he urged them to act like children with a sick father, determined not to let him down. Wike also cautioned against introducing religion into political matters and encouraged members to return to their constituencies to work for the party’s success.

Wike challenged party members to actively contribute to the party’s efforts, stating, “This is not a place for empty hands.” He urged each NEC member to bring something valuable to the table, whether it be a seat in the House of Representatives or a House of Assembly member.

Addressing claims from the Tanimu Turaki-led PDP faction about sponsoring candidates for all elective positions in 2027, Wike explained that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) access code would determine legitimacy. He assured members that they should not fear court cases or opposition, emphasizing that political preparation is key.

Wike urged party members not to fear intimidation, harassment, or arrest, using his own experiences as a testament to resilience in the face of challenges.
