Abuja: The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has handed over 12 new ambulances to FCT hospitals, a move aimed at supporting emergency services in the health system. Wike explained during the handing over in Abuja that this effort was part of the FCT Administration’s broader focus, which includes not only road infrastructure and education but other critical sectors.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the minister emphasized the importance of having good road conditions for the effective use of ambulances, highlighting that without well-maintained roads, the purpose of emergency vehicles is compromised. He also mentioned that the administration is in the process of rehabilitating and furnishing 14 health centers and has directed the employment of additional personnel for the health sector.
Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, called the procurement and distribution of the ambulances a significant milestone in strengthening emergency healthcare delivery. She noted that the initiative reflects a commitment to people-centered governance and improved health outcomes for all residents of FCT. Fasawe further highlighted strategic investments in road infrastructure that have positively impacted healthcare delivery, reducing travel time for emergency services.
She also pointed out the administration’s understanding of health systems, which includes infrastructure, immunization, insurance, and human resources. The administration has paid overdue allowances, including hazard allowances for healthcare workers and other financial commitments. Additionally, the upgrade of the FCT School of Nursing to a College of Nursing signifies a coordinated effort to enhance healthcare access and quality for FCT residents.
