Abuja: The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has emphasized to FCT workers that the ongoing strike issue remains under judicial consideration. He urged the workers to comply with the court’s directives while handing over 12 new ambulances to FCT hospitals in Abuja on Thursday.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the reminder from Wike comes in response to the actions of the union leaders of the FCT workers, under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC). JUAC had instructed FCT workers to resume their strike, which began on January 19, due to unresolved welfare issues. This directive was issued despite the National Industrial Court’s ruling on January 27, which ordered the suspension of the strike and adjourned the matter to March 23. The union has appealed against the court’s decision through its lead counsel, Femi Falana, SAN.
Wike argued that filing a notice of appeal does not automatically stay the execution of the court’s order. He expressed concern over the refusal to obey court orders, highlighting the potential consequences of such actions. He warned of possible contempt of court proceedings against those obstructing operations or refusing to comply with the court’s ruling. Wike emphasized the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue without resorting to threats or unlawful actions.
The Minister assured that the government is addressing the workers’ concerns, with most issues already resolved. He stressed the importance of sincere dialogue and criticized any attempts to politicize the situation. Wike reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the issues within the FCT Administration gradually and emphasized that dialogue should remain the primary approach to resolving problems.
Wike also highlighted recent reforms, including the elevation of FCTA workers to the position of permanent secretary and the creation of the FCT Civil Service Commission under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He encouraged workers to focus on constructive dialogue and assured them of ongoing efforts to address their concerns.
