Abuja: The Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Navy, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have pledged to work together to ensure safety, fairness, and credibility in the 2027 general elections. The pledge was made at a one-day seminar organised by Naval Base Abuja themed ‘The Roles of the Armed Forces in Conducting Free, Fair and Credible Elections’ on Monday in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, ACP Akaniyene Edwards from the Department of Operations, FCT command, emphasized the critical role of support from the armed forces in ensuring successful elections in Nigeria. Although the responsibility for safety during elections primarily falls on the Police, the military provides essential manpower to cover every part of the country during elections. The military presence is aimed at countering external forces that may seek to disrupt the electoral process.
Edwards, speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after the seminar, noted that the Police are preparing to enhance service efficiency for the upcoming 2027 election. This preparation includes training and retraining personnel, familiarizing them with the Electoral Act and election-related regulations. Engagements with stakeholders, community leaders, youth leaders, and civil societies are also underway to ensure a seamless electoral process free from intimidation or harassment, ultimately leading to a safe, fair, and credible election. Edwards urged personnel on election duty to remain impartial, professional, and only use force when necessary.
Commodore Oluseyi Oladipo, Commander of Naval Base Abuja, stated that the military would support the democratic process by creating conditions conducive to free, fair, and credible elections. With elections approaching, Nigeria prioritizes improving electoral practices in accordance with established conventions. Oladipo highlighted the importance of examining the armed forces’ role within constitutional, legal, and institutional frameworks, noting that the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, has directed commands and bases to organize such seminars. The seminar aims to increase awareness among Nigerian Navy personnel who will be deployed for electoral duties, reaffirming their commitment to preserving democracy in Nigeria.
Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC) Stephen John, representing the NSCDC, emphasized the importance of protecting Nigerians’ rights to vote, labeling it a democratic fundamental. The armed forces and security agencies must collaborate to safeguard lives and property, protect voter rights, and ensure the security and transportation of sensitive electoral materials. John expressed optimism that coordinated efforts among law enforcement agencies would lead to a peaceful, credible, free, and fair election.
