Abuja: The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has issued a stern warning to tertiary institutions against the practice of granting admissions outside the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), labeling such actions as illegal. This announcement was made by JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, during the 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions held in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Prof. Oloyede highlighted that certain institutions are still providing admission letters to candidates without the requisite approval from CAPS, in direct violation of Federal Government mandates. He emphasized that such practices compromise the integrity and transparency of the admission process, noting instances where candidates with higher scores were overlooked while those with lower scores received admissions.
Oloyede revealed that disciplinary measures have been initiated against the institutions involved, with sanctions to follow. He further disclosed that a legal case is currently underway involving 11 universities accused of conducting illegal admissions.
Additionally, Oloyede addressed allegations that candidates were being posted to examination centers outside their selected towns. He clarified that candidates choose their preferred examination towns during the registration process and are allocated centers within those areas. Investigations have confirmed that no candidate was assigned outside their chosen examination town. The issue has also been reviewed by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
