Abuja: The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of waste evacuation and cleaning contractors tasked with maintaining cleanliness in the Federal Capital Territory. The Director of AEPB, Mrs. Kate Ogbonna, shared her concerns during a meeting with the contractors in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ogbonna revealed that reports from supervisors overseeing the contractors’ daily activities have not been favorable. Routine inspections by the Board indicated that the contractors are falling short in their responsibilities. Ogbonna urged the contractors to improve their performance and ensure efficient waste management across the Federal Capital City. She emphasized that the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has been prompt in payments, leaving contractors with no excuse for not fulfilling their contractual obligations.
Ogbonna acknowledged potential challenges but advised contractors to acquire more equipment and personnel to streamline their operations. She reminded them of their contractual commitments and assured them of the Board’s support as needed. The meeting aimed to educate contractors about their responsibilities and the standards expected of them. Ogbonna also addressed the issue of construction waste, stating that the Board is collaborating with the Department of Development Control to ensure proper disposal.
Residents and businesses in the capital were urged to pay their waste management fees and use appropriately sized waste bins. Ogbonna stressed that waste management is costly, and cooperation from all parties is essential to keep Abuja clean and free from pollution and epidemics. She highlighted the importance of timely waste removal and proper bin usage to prevent environmental messes.
Mr. Benjamin Enwerem, Director of Solid Waste Management at AEPB, noted complaints from contractors about waste generated by night traders and funfair operators, which contributes to illegal dumping. Enwerem assured that the Board’s task force would address these issues. Despite acknowledging lapses, Enwerem observed improvements in contractors’ performance due to additional personnel.
Mallam Ibrahim Babayo, Chairman of the Association of Solid Waste Contractors, admitted to the contractors’ shortcomings and pledged to enhance their performance.
