Abuja:The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dr. Adewole Adebayo, has made a strong appeal to the media for balanced coverage of all political parties and their candidates in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. During a dinner with journalists in Abuja, Adebayo emphasized the importance of independent and impartial reporting on key issues affecting Nigerians.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Adebayo highlighted the necessity for the media to focus on critical issues such as insecurity, poverty, corruption, and democratic governance, ensuring that various perspectives are presented to the public. He believes that fair media coverage will provide Nigerians with access to diverse opinions, enabling them to make informed decisions during the elections.
Adebayo expressed concerns that media coverage should not give the impression that only a select few candidates are significant in the presidential elections. He emphasized the vital roles of both the media and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in promoting credible elections and stressed that responsible reporting is crucial to the democratic process.
He also cautioned media organizations against allowing commercial interests to compromise their commitment to fair coverage of political parties and their agendas. Reflecting on the SDP’s past, Adebayo referred to the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, underscoring the party’s dedication to democratic governance and the right of Nigerians to select their leaders through transparent elections.
Adebayo urged political parties to present clear policy proposals to tackle the country’s challenges and called on the media to provide adequate platforms for public discourse on these manifestos. The SDP candidate reiterated that the party’s vision is based on the principle that the government’s primary responsibility is to ensure the security and welfare of the people.
He concluded by stating that the SDP has released its 2027 presidential manifesto, “Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity,” in multiple languages to make its policies accessible to a broader audience.
