Lagos: Super Eagles Head Coach, Eric Chelle, says Nigeria must balance identity and adaptability when they face Tunisia in a decisive Group C encounter at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. Chelle described Tunisia as a disciplined and unpredictable side, stressing that tactical flexibility and intensity would be key to securing qualification for the knockout stage.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Chelle emphasized the importance of deciding whether to maintain Nigeria’s playing philosophy or adapt to counter Tunisia’s strengths. He highlighted the options of either pressing aggressively or allowing Tunisia possession, but insisted on the non-negotiable elements of commitment, direct play, and winning second balls. Chelle noted, “We must fight for every ball, stay compact and be decisive when we have possession. At this level, details and mentality make the difference.”
Super Eagles captain, Wilfred Ndidi, expressed confidence in the team’s mental strength and motivation following their 2-1 opening victory over Tanzania. Ndidi remarked that the win boosted their confidence, but they also focused on reviewing and improving upon their mistakes. He acknowledged the lingering impact of the 2021 AFCON defeat to Tunisia, stating that the team is using it as motivation for the upcoming match.
Ndidi emphasized that the squad is united in purpose and prepared for the physical and tactical demands of the match. He stated, “We know what is at stake. We are physically ready, mentally strong and very confident about what we want to achieve as a team.” The upcoming clash in their second Group C fixture at the Complexe Sportif de F¨s is set for Saturday, with a 9 p.m. kick-off.
Both teams emerged victorious in their opening matches, with Nigeria defeating Tanzania 2-1 and Tunisia securing a 3-1 win over Uganda.
