Abuja: The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, has inaugurated 75 electric motorcycles for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), marking a significant milestone in improving the corps’ ability to safeguard lives and property nationwide. Akume emphasized that this initiative is a strategic enhancement of the FRSC’s operational capabilities and Nigeria’s internal security framework.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Akume highlighted that the programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes citizen protection, infrastructure security, and restored public confidence. He noted that while roads serve crucial economic and social functions, they are increasingly being exploited for criminal activities, with crimes being committed on highways due to congestion, traffic breakdowns, and limited access in challenging terrains.
Akume described the electric motorcycles as both timely and strategic, enhancing rapid response, manoeuvrability, and surveillance, particularly in congested and hard-to-reach areas. He explained that these motorcycles will support highway patrols and improve operational effectiveness during emergencies and security interventions. Furthermore, he noted that the bikes are cost-effective and environmentally friendly, aligning with the administration’s clean energy and sustainable transport policies.
Each motorcycle boasts a range of 150 to 160 kilometers per charge and a top speed of 100 kilometers per hour. They are equipped with sirens, amber lights, loudspeakers, digital displays, recording systems, and secured compartments for enforcement equipment. Akume reiterated that this initiative supports the President’s directive for a multi-agency, intelligence-driven, and technology-supported security approach, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.
Akume also acknowledged that although the FRSC was originally established for road safety, its role has evolved within Nigeria’s internal security architecture. He emphasized that road safety and national security are inseparable, as safe roads reduce crime and support economic growth, unity, and social stability. Akume urged the FRSC to strengthen collaboration with other security agencies through joint patrols, intelligence sharing, training, and adequate equipping.
In his remarks, FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and President Tinubu for the motorcycles, describing the support as timely and recognizing the corps’ expanding role within the national security framework. Mohammed noted that the Federal Government has consistently provided policy support, reforms, capacity building, and operational equipment, contributing to national security.
Mohammed emphasized that the timing of this initiative is crucial, especially as the festive season approaches, bringing increased traffic volumes, congestion, and road crashes nationwide. He stated that the motorcycles will be deployed immediately for traffic control, patrols, enforcement, escorts, and special assignments, enhancing swift response, decongesting highways, and ensuring safe and confident travel for Nigerians without unnecessary delays.
