Abuja: A Nigerian Air Force officer, AVM Samson Eyekosi, has called for collective action in mitigation, prevention, and management of disasters in the country. Eyekosi, one of the recently-promoted Air Vice Marshalls, emphasized the importance of joint efforts by federal, state, and local governments, alongside individuals and corporate bodies, in addressing disaster challenges.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Eyekosi made this call during an interview following a special thanksgiving event and the unveiling of his book in Abuja. He stressed that a paradigm shift in disaster management requires collaborative efforts from all stakeholders, regardless of gender, class, or creed. Eyekosi’s book, titled ‘A Guide for Effective Management of Displaced Persons During Emergencies,’ is his contribution to enhancing humanitarian efforts.
The officer shared that his inspiration for writing the book stemmed from the flash floods that occurred in Mokwa, Niger State in 2025. He noted that while the response to the floods was commendable, there were noticeable gaps that needed to be addressed to improve future disaster responses. Eyekosi urged individuals to contribute money, time, skills, and knowledge to assist disaster victims and called on the media to focus more on those in distress.
He highlighted the need for better coordination among government agencies, especially the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, National Emergency Management Agency, and State Emergency Management Agencies. Eyekosi pointed out the lack of necessary capacity and advocated for capacity building, improved structures, and organization in disaster management. He also called for accountability and checks and balances among those involved in disaster management to accelerate growth in this area.
The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse lll, also expressed his admiration for the book, noting its valuable insights for both federal and state governments in addressing the country’s disaster challenges. Represented by Mr. Missan Okuboyinje, the royal father acknowledged the issue of perennial flooding and stated that the book provides solutions to such problems.
Mr. Sam Oburoh, Chairman of the occasion, praised Eyekosi for his new rank and the effort put into the book. He described Eyekosi as a person always ready to assist those in distress. Additionally, Mr. Henry Nwawuba (Jnr), who reviewed the book, highlighted its 205 pages and 20 chapters, which cover all aspects of disaster management and solutions to crisis situations.
