Abuja: Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD-West Africa) has called on Nigerian leaders to maintain their focus on community development, emphasizing the importance of continued investment in this area. John Odah, the Chair of CDD International Governing Council, made this appeal during the inauguration of a community water project and toilet facility at Shadadi LEA Primary School in Kuje, Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the initiative was executed in commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day. Odah highlighted that the project aligns with the United Nations’ call for community service and celebrates Mandela’s legacy of justice, equality, and selfless leadership across Africa. The choice of a community location for the project, rather than limiting it to the school, ensures that both residents and pupils benefit throughout the year, minimizing the risk of vandalism during school holidays.
The newly inaugurated water facility, powered by solar energy, is designed to provide uninterrupted access despite the challenges of electricity supply in the region. ‘We commend the community and school authorities for forming a joint committee to manage and maintain the water facility sustainably,’ Odah stated. He also pledged CDD’s ongoing engagement with the community, including potential partnerships to establish a library that supports learning and responsible citizenship among young people.
Dr Dauda Garuba, Director of CDD-West Africa, emphasized the positive impact of the project on the beneficiaries’ lives. Meanwhile, Mr Kasimu Shaba, the Head Teacher of the school, expressed gratitude to CDD for their contribution, describing the solar-powered borehole as a testament to service, compassion, and Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy. He noted that the borehole would provide clean, reliable water, improve sanitation, and benefit the surrounding residents.
Shaba applauded the renovation of the toilet facilities as an investment in the future of the younger generation and urged pupils to learn from this act of responsible citizenship. He also prayed for CDD’s continued growth and impact across communities in honor of Nelson Mandela International Day.
Mr Yunusa Zakara, LEA Education Secretary for Kuje Area Council, commended CDD for their efforts. Represented by Mr Mohammed Abdulmumin, Head of Department, Administration, Zakara urged the school and community to maintain the facilities to encourage further interventions. Samuel Zechariah, representing the head of Shadadi community, echoed this sentiment, appealing for the protection of the project. Mrs Ugwe Benedict, a school administrator, noted that the project would significantly enhance hygiene and sanitation at the school.
