Lagos: Ms Yan Yuqing, the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, has expressed optimism that China-Nigeria relations are set to overcome challenges and develop with unstoppable momentum in 2026. This statement came as she highlighted the significance of the upcoming year, marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Yan emphasized that the Chinese Consulate-General will continue to engage in various cultural exchanges and charitable donations to enhance mutual understanding between the two civilizations. She believes these initiatives will further solidify the foundation of a shared future between China and Nigeria.
Yuqing also mentioned that about 20 countries and the United Nations have recognized the Spring Festival as a statutory public holiday. She described it as a significant traditional festival that encapsulates Chinese culture and offers an important perspective on understanding China.
With a rich history spanning over 4,000 years, the Spring Festival is celebrated as the commencement of the Chinese New Year. Yuqing pointed out that the festival is a time of family reunion and embodies the Chinese cultural ethos of harmony and good fortune.
In 2024, the festival was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a testament to its global cultural significance. Yuqing remarked that the festival now belongs to the world, not just China.
Looking ahead, the envoy noted that 2026 will be the Year of the Horse in Chinese tradition, symbolizing strength, courage, and success, further underscoring the positive outlook for China-Nigeria relations in the coming years.
