Post: China Reaffirms One-China Principle Amid Taiwan-Eswatini Controversy

Nairobi: China on Saturday urged Eswatini and other countries of the world to respect and recognise its One-China principle, as well as desist from giving credence to the illusion of ‘Taiwan independence.’

According to News Agency of Nigeria, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson made the remarks after Lai Ching-te, leader of China’s Taiwan region, traveled to Eswatini on Saturday, where he was inappropriately addressed as ‘President’ instead of ‘Leader.’ The Chinese Government, therefore, urged Eswatini and world leaders to ‘see where the arc of history bends and stop serving as the prop of Taiwan independence separatists.’

The spokesperson criticized Lai Ching-te for leaving Taiwan shortly after the Yilan earthquake, claiming he abandoned the people of Taiwan during a crisis to travel on a private jet provided by the King of Eswatini. The spokesperson described this as a misuse of taxpayer money and an attempt to further the ‘Taiwan independence’ agenda.

The Chinese foreign ministry reiterated that the ‘One-China’ principle is a fundamental aspect of China’s international relations and a widely accepted international consensus. The spokesperson stated that the efforts of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to collaborate with external forces will ultimately fail, as the status of Taiwan as part of China remains unchanged.

The spokesperson further emphasized that attempts by ‘Taiwan independence’ forces to disguise their intentions or alter their image will not protect them from international criticism. The global community, he asserted, continues to reject the notion of ‘Taiwan independence.’
