Abuja: The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, has acknowledged the significant contributions of the Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA) in enhancing the support system for naval personnel, thereby improving operational efficiency across various commands. Abbas expressed these sentiments during his goodwill message at the NOWA 60th Anniversary Dinner held in Abuja, emphasizing the association’s role as a foundational pillar for naval families and a source of motivation for officers in challenging operational settings.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Abbas highlighted that the security of naval homes, the care of children, and the strength of families can be attributed to the unwavering support provided by NOWA. He attributed many of the Navy’s current successes to the assurance that naval families are well-supported. Abbas also commended the leadership of NOWA President, Mrs. Aisha Abbas, describing her as a leader whose initiatives have positively impacted widows, orphans, and vulnerable families.
In her address, Mrs. Abbas remarked that the anniversary marked a moment to celebrate NOWA’s extensive journey of service while renewing its commitment to national development. She emphasized the devotion of NOWA members as the core of the association and announced plans to expand programs aimed at empowering women and reinforcing family support systems. She expressed gratitude to sister associations for their support and reaffirmed NOWA’s commitment to being a robust pillar for naval personnel and their families.
Additionally, Mrs. Mernan Oluyede, President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), reflected on NOWA’s 60-year journey as a testament to the collective strength and resilience of Nigerian military women. Citing Maya Angelou, Oluyede praised NOWA for its six decades of empowerment, charity, and support for naval communities and pledged continued collaboration with other military wives’ associations to enhance the welfare of military families.
Hajiya Safiyyah Shaibu, President of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), also congratulated NOWA, noting that its achievements have been an inspiration to sister associations within the armed forces. Shaibu stressed that the bond among the various women’s associations remains a crucial support system for officers serving nationwide.
The anniversary dinner was marked by music, awards, and tributes to pioneer members who established the foundation for what has become one of the country’s oldest and most influential military women’s organizations.
