Abuja: Dr Opaluwa Ejiga, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Architecture at Nile University, highlighted the importance of collaboration in the field of architecture, stating that it is essential for effective practice. This statement was made during the inaugural edition of the 2026 Italian Design Day programme in Abuja, organized in partnership with the Italian Embassy in Nigeria and the Nigerian Institute of Architecture.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the three-day event featured presentations by visiting Italian architects Luca Marullo and Stefano Colombo, co-founders of Parasite 2.0 Studio. Their presentations focused on transforming temporary spaces into permanent architectural solutions, showcasing innovative and experimental design approaches. Attendees included students from the University of Abuja, Nile University of Nigeria, and Baze University.
Dr Ejiga emphasized that synergy is vital because the foundation of architectural education in Nigeria involves studying international architecture. He noted that Italian architecture has influenced Nigerian culture and stressed the necessity of collaboration and exposure for architects. He believes that such platforms can help students evolve beyond traditional architecture to achieve global recognition.
Luca Marullo discussed the 2026 Italian design theme, ‘regenerate,’ highlighting architecture and design’s role in environmental transformation. He explained that architecture and design extend beyond buildings and furniture, offering diverse applications.
Dr AbdulRaheem Olakanbi, Head of the Department of Architecture at the University of Abuja, echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the impact of Italian architectural designs on global architecture. He praised the event for aligning with Nigerian schools’ efforts to expose students to international architecture.
Mrs Chinwe Sam-Amobi, Head of the Department of Architecture at Baze University, described the event as timely amidst challenges posed by non-professionals in the field. She noted that visiting architects introduced students to various architectural aspects, including furniture, interior design, and fashion. She emphasized the importance of understanding different specialization options, such as landscape and furniture design, in the architectural profession.
