Abuja: The ECOWAS Commission, through the Directorate of Private Sector and Industry, in collaboration with the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), convened a one-day Consultative Meeting with the Confederation of Private Sector Organisations of Tourism in ECOWAS (COPITOUR). The meeting took place on 29 July 2026 on the sidelines of the 9th Nigeria Tourism Investors Forum and Exhibition (NTIFE 2026).
According to African Press Organization, the gathering attracted Presidents of National Tourism Associations, Directors General of Tourism Development Agencies, and key stakeholders from across West Africa, including Ghana, Guinea, Togo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, Benin, C´te d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Nigeria. The focus was on the ECOWAS framework for the recognition and accreditation of regional business associations (RBAs).
While opening the meeting, the Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Kalilou Sylla, represented by Ms. Anna Wadda, emphasized the importance of tourism as an instrument for regional integration. The ECOWAS Commission reiterated its commitment to strengthening RBAs as partners in promoting peace, cultural understanding, employment, investment, and economic prosperity in West Africa.
The Directorate of Private Sector and Industry presented the Framework for the Recognition of Regional Business Associations. Built on seven pillars, the framework establishes standards for accreditation and aims to enhance governance, transparency, accountability, and performance of RBAs. The COPITOUR delegates adopted the framework, endorsing it as a strategic tool for regional development.
Chief John Umoren, representing the ECOWAS Commission, highlighted tourism’s broad scope beyond traditional sectors, stressing opportunities in sports tourism and creative industries. He urged COPITOUR to explore these areas, viewing sports tourism as a promising avenue for economic growth.
The meeting concluded successfully, with delegates optimistic about the future collaboration between ECOWAS and COPITOUR, laying a foundation for stronger partnerships in the region.
