Abuja: India has expressed its commitment to inclusive development, stronger representation for developing countries, and a rules-based international order. India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhishek Singh, made these remarks while delivering the 80th Independence Day address of Indian President, Mrs. Droupadi Murmu, in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Singh emphasized India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, focusing on reaching all sections of society. He highlighted the contributions of citizens across various sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and public service, which drive the country’s progress.
Singh stated that India’s development agenda ensures the benefits of growth reach every individual, guided by the principle of Antyodaya. He underscored India’s achievements in poverty reduction, financial inclusion, healthcare, and food security. More than 250 million people have been lifted out of poverty, with nearly 590 million included in the formal banking sys
tem through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, and over 320 million beneficiaries being women.
The envoy noted the provision of free food grains to more than 800 million people and healthcare coverage to about 600 million under the Ayushman Bharat programme. He also pointed to India’s expanding digital transformation, with the country hosting over half of the world’s real-time digital transactions.
Singh highlighted India’s robust economic growth amidst global instability, maintaining its position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy. He mentioned the expansion of modern infrastructure such as highways, railways, and airports, which create opportunities for businesses and investment.
He reiterated that India’s national interest forms the foundation of its foreign policy, guided by peace, cooperation, and the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam in its global engagements. Singh emphasized India’s leadership role in the Global South and commitment to a rules-based international order, advocating for b
etter representation in the United Nations and other multilateral organizations.
Singh also stressed the importance of environmental sustainability, urging citizens to protect natural resources and highlighting India’s progress in renewable energy and sustainable development goals. He recognized women and youth as key drivers of India’s future, noting the increasing participation of women in various sectors and the empowerment of youth through education and skills development initiatives.
The envoy paid tribute to India’s armed forces for their service, reflecting on the country’s efforts to combat terrorism and protect national interests. He also recalled India’s independence struggle, honoring the sacrifices made during the partitioning and the contributions of leaders and citizens to the nation’s development.
Singh concluded by urging citizens to uphold the values of the Constitution and actively participate in nation-building efforts.
