Abuja: The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has launched a new register aimed at formally recognising and regulating the roles of building technologists, technicians, and craftsmen within the construction industry. This initiative is set to promote professional growth and ensure quality control within Nigeria’s building sector.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, CORBON Chairman, Dr. Samson Opaluwah, announced during a news conference in Abuja that the new register seeks to enhance career development for key personnel in the construction sector. While over 4,000 builders have been registered since the council’s inception under Decree 45 of 1989, there had been no formal recognition for the craftsmen and technicians who support them.
Dr. Opaluwah highlighted the critical roles these professionals play on construction sites and stressed the importance of their inclusion within the regulatory framework. He stated that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and introduces a structured framework for the regulation and certification of all practitioners on building sites.
The new registration process will incorporate the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), which was approved by the Federal Executive Council in 2013. This framework serves as a certification and licensing standard for the informal sector and allows practitioners to advance through various levels of certification, from entry-level to expert.
Employers are expected to benefit from a more transparent and reliable benchmark for recruitment and development, while regulatory agencies will gain better capacity for oversight and enforcement. Additionally, governments will improve data collection and management of available skills, ultimately benefiting society with enhanced safety, quality, and professionalism in housing delivery.
Dr. Opaluwah also announced an upcoming call for applications for registration, urging building technologists, technicians, and craftsmen to leverage these new opportunities to formalise their roles in the construction sector.
