Abuja: A legal practitioner, Mr. Christopher Eichie, has highlighted corruption, weak institutions, and declining ethical values as major obstacles to Nigeria’s development. Eichie made these remarks during the investiture of Rotarian Nosa Ayemien as the 12th President of the Rotary Club of Abuja Kubwa, held on Sunday in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Eichie emphasized that Nigeria, despite its abundant natural resources, youthful population, and entrepreneurial resilience, continues to face developmental challenges that undermine national progress. He pointed out that weak institutional accountability, abuse of public trust, and insecurity have constrained development, preventing the country from realizing its enormous human and economic potential.
Eichie stressed the critical role of integrity, describing it as one of Nigeria’s greatest developmental challenges. He stated that leadership, integrity, and service are inseparable pillars essential for enduring national development. Without these
pillars, the structure of national progress becomes unstable, he explained.
The lawyer attributed corruption and financial crimes to eroding ethical values in the country. He outlined that integrity encompasses honesty, transparency, professional ethics, respect for the rule of law, and prudent resource management. Eichie urged for ethical leadership across all sectors, emphasizing that governments alone cannot transform Nigeria.
Eichie called for leadership that reflects vision, courage, accountability, empathy, service, and measurable impact. He advocated for stronger institutions, stating that nations progress when systems are stronger than individuals and consistently reward integrity instead of dishonesty. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of investing in education, mentorship, and skills development, urging leaders to promote national unity through inclusion, tolerance, and mutual respect.
Commending Rotary International’s humanitarian efforts, Eichie remarked that leadership without integri
ty becomes oppression, integrity without service becomes self-righteousness, and service without leadership lacks direction. He urged Nigerians to embrace ethical leadership, integrity, and selfless service, expressing confidence that collective commitment will build a stronger, more peaceful, and prosperous nation.
In his acceptance speech, Ayemien highlighted that Rotary comprises professionals who pool their resources to assist the less privileged in society and provide basic amenities for rural communities. He noted that Rotary bridges the gap between the government and the people, as the government cannot address all issues alone.
The event also featured goodwill messages from the District Governor, Rotary District 9127, Sikiru Owonikoko, and past presidents of the club, including Rotarians Obas Ekeinde, Mike Idemoh, Idowu Olayemi, and Shittu Hakeem, among others. A highlight of the occasion was the conferment of awards of excellence on several Nigerians for their significant contributions to community
development.
