Abuja: The Cross River Government has introduced a new policy exempting female commercial drivers and elderly men aged 60 and above from paying vehicle registration and daily operational levies. This initiative was announced by Chief Oliver Orok, the Chairman of the Cross River Transport Regulatory Agency (CTRA), during a meeting with the drivers’ union covering Calabar metropolis and the southern senatorial district.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the exemption aligns with Governor Bassey Otu’s ‘People First’ agenda and the administration’s ‘Season of Sweetness’ for transporters. Chief Orok explained that women engaged in the driving business would be relieved from registration fees and daily levies, effectively making their operations cost-free. Similarly, men over 60 who own and drive their vehicles commercially are also exempt from these charges.
The government has further reduced ticket prices and suspended enforcement of certain road offences to facilitate business operations for commercial drivers. Additionally, the state plans to maintain free transport services during festive periods and provide fuel support to vehicle owners to aid their businesses.
Chief Orok emphasized the importance of compliance with vehicle regulations, urging drivers to adhere to the state’s official colors for vehicle painting and avoid unauthorized stickers. He also reminded drivers to complete their registration and settle any required levies.
To ensure compliance, the CTRA will initiate special enforcement from August 1, in collaboration with security agencies. This measure aims to address revenue loss and division within the union caused by some drivers and officials who encourage non-payment of tickets.
In a related effort to boost civic participation, the CTRA has invited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register drivers for voter cards during the meeting. Acknowledging that many commercial drivers lack time to visit ward offices, plans are being made to establish registration points along major routes.
