Abuja: The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Zonal Command has announced the deployment of 3,339 personnel, alongside 69 patrol vehicles, 18 ambulances, four tow trucks, and 24 motorbikes for ‘Operation Sauka Lafiya’. The initiative was disclosed by the Zonal Commanding Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Comfort Asom, during a briefing in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the special operation, code-named ‘Sauka Lafiya’, is set to be inaugurated within the week and aims to bolster road safety enforcement in the zone. The operation focuses on enhancing road safety, improving traffic management, and protecting lives and property.
Asom emphasized the FRSC’s commitment to its mission of ensuring safer roads in Nigeria through effective patrols, strategic enforcement, public education, and prompt emergency response. With increasing road traffic in the zone, the operation seeks to address traffic violations significantly contributing to road crashes and congestion.
The operation is designed to reduce road traffic crashes, fatalities, and injuries, while ensuring free traffic flow and arresting offenders of speed violations, overloading, and other traffic infractions. Enhanced patrol coverage, intelligence-driven enforcement, speed management, vehicle inspections, and public enlightenment campaigns are emphasized in the operational strategy.
Asom highlighted the operation’s focus on improving traffic movement in major cities, highways, and congestion-prone areas. Personnel will be deployed to remove obstructions, prevent indiscriminate parking, and ensure orderly traffic control.
The operation also targets the arrest and prosecution of unlicensed drivers, traffic light violators, and those driving under the influence, aligning with the FRSC Establishment Act and National Road Traffic Regulations. Asom clarified that the objective is to ensure compliance with traffic laws and safeguard public safety rather than unnecessary punishment.
Further, increased visibility of FRSC personnel at identified black spots and high-risk corridors is planned, with collaboration with other agencies where necessary. Asom urged road users to obey traffic rules, ensure vehicle roadworthiness, and cooperate with FRSC personnel to ensure the operation’s success.
