Abuja: President Bola Tinubu has emphasized that democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere of insecurity, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the country. Tinubu made this statement during his Democracy Day address, highlighting the vital link between security and democratic governance.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu stated, “Democracy without security is a mirage.” He explained that this concern led his administration to declare a security emergency and approve the recruitment of over 50,000 new police officers and thousands of military recruits. The president’s remarks underscore the significance of a stable and secure environment for the flourishing of democratic institutions.
Tinubu paid tribute to Nigerians who fought for democratic rule, acknowledging them as patriots whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the freedoms enjoyed today. He honored the resilience of Nigerians who maintained their faith in freedom and the courage of those who stood firm against intimidation and oppression. The president also commended various groups, including labor leaders, journalists, activists, students, women, professionals, political leaders, and members of the armed forces, for their contributions to the country’s democratic journey.
Tinubu expressed concern over the recent abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno States, acknowledging that these incidents have cast a shadow over this year’s Democracy Day celebrations. Despite the somber mood, he remains hopeful for the safe return of the abducted children, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to addressing security challenges.
Highlighting the government’s dedication to security, Tinubu revealed that the 2026 budget has allocated N5.41 trillion to defence and security, marking the highest security allocation in the nation’s history. He emphasized that the administration is prepared to do even more to ensure the safety and security of the citizens, reiterating that democracy can only flourish where citizens feel safe and secure.
