Enugu: The Enugu State Government and the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) have partnered to establish a minimum benchmark for radiative equipment to ensure safety in health facilities across the state.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, at the 2026 Stakeholders’ Meeting on Radiative Safety held in Enugu, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing safety and protection in healthcare delivery. Ugwu highlighted that the state is actively reviewing radiative equipment in health facilities to ensure compliance with NNRA safety procedures, regulatory frameworks, and periodic inspection standards.
The initiative is part of ongoing investments in healthcare under Governor Peter Mbah, with an emphasis on ensuring that all facilities and radiographers strictly adhere to NNRA guidelines and safety standards. The commissioner noted that the 300-bed international hospital nearing completion has already received advanced medical equipment, which has passed NNRA inspection and certification for use.
Dr. Yau Idris, Director-General of NNRA, commended the state’s efforts in strengthening healthcare safety and ensuring that quality standards are maintained in service delivery. Represented by the NNRA South-East Zonal Coordinator, Rev. Sis. Chioma Nwankwo, Idris affirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting Nigerians from harmful ionising radiation. He stressed the importance of radiation technology in modern medicine, particularly in cancer radiotherapy, which necessitates strict safety compliance and responsible use.
Idris called for stronger regulatory compliance, continuous training, workforce development, and the integration of radiation protection into the overall healthcare quality systems nationwide. He emphasized that the safe and effective use of radiative equipment is a shared responsibility among regulators, health workers, patients, and facility managers.
During the meeting, presentations focused on NNRA mandates, radiation protection in medicine, and authorisation procedures for the safe use of radiative equipment. Radiographers from various facilities, including public, private, mission, and government-owned, pledged to uphold NNRA safety standards in their daily clinical practice.
