Abuja: Dr Michael David, the Executive Director of the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP), has highlighted the critical role of family values in shaping individuals and, by extension, societies.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, David, during an interview, stated that while policies may have the power to shape systems, it is families that shape people, who ultimately shape society. He drew inspiration from a sermon delivered by Rev. Fr. Raymond Nor, Priest in Charge of Blessed Tansi Catholic Church in Pyakasa, Abuja, emphasizing the theme ‘Strong Families, Healthy Societies’.
David reiterated that society is a direct product of family dynamics, as reflected in communities, institutions, and leadership structures. He emphasized that families are the fundamental unit where values such as responsibility, love, and community are instilled. When families function healthily, society reaps the benefits.
He also cautioned that dysfunctional families could lead to societal issues like violence, intolerance, and corruption. David noted that such societal problems often stem from family environments lacking love, unity, and forgiveness, which are crucial for healthy societal development.
David highlighted the importance of teaching accountability, discipline, and service to children, as these values translate into responsible governance, business, and civic life. Conversely, families rooted in love and shared responsibility cultivate individuals who contribute positively to society.
He pointed to the Holy Family as an enduring model of commitment and mutual respect, advocating for unity and responsibility within families as a foundation for societal rebuilding. David concluded that to foster a society grounded in justice, peace, and compassion, strengthening family units is indispensable. The future of society, he emphasized, is being shaped within the home today.
