Lagos: The Extraordinary Women Advancing Healthcare (EWAH) Awards has reiterated its commitment to promoting women’s leadership in healthcare, stressing the need for greater visibility and recognition across the sector. Dr. Bisi Bright, the Regional Representative of EWAH, who spoke at a news conference held in Lagos ahead of its upcoming awards on June 27, highlighted the need to address disparities in leadership.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Bright, Chief Executive Officer of LiveWell Initiative, said although women constituted more than two-thirds of the global health workforce, they remained significantly underrepresented in leadership and decision-making positions across institutions. “EWAH was established to recognise and amplify the contributions of women making extraordinary impacts in healthcare while encouraging more women to aspire to leadership roles. The awards promote women who are making exceptional contributions and encourage them to sustain and expand their impact within healthcare a
nd related sectors,” she said.
She noted that the awards, guided by the theme, ‘Extraordinary Women Advancing Healthcare with a Miles-to-Go Mindset,’ reflected a continuous commitment to service, innovation, and leadership. The Regional Representative added that some of the previous honourees had gone on to attain higher positions in government, academia, and public health after receiving recognition through the programme. Speaking further, Bright said 10 individuals would be honoured at the third edition of the upcoming EWAH awards.
“This year, 10 women selected through public recommendations, independent searches, and final review by the EWAH Board, with emphasis on impact, innovation, inclusiveness, and service will be honoured. The honourees include women advancing healthcare through artificial intelligence, digital health solutions, improved access to medicines, and community-based health interventions,” she said.
Also, Mrs. Uju Nwabuzor, Director of Programme Delivering at Bloom Public Health, said t
he organisation’s partnership with EWAH reflects a shared commitment to celebrating individuals creating positive change across communities. Nwabuzor said the leadership and service of the honourees continued to improve lives and strengthen healthcare outcomes through impactful interventions and community-focused development initiatives.
Project Manager of the EWAH Awards, Mr. Damilola Raji, described the initiative as a platform that recognised excellence while inspiring younger healthcare professionals toward innovation and leadership. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the EWAH awards, run by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, now known as ‘The Woman’s Edge,’ is the mother programme for EWAH Africa Awards.
