Post: Taraba State’s New University Recognised by NUC

Gembu: The National Universities Commission (NUC) has formally recognised the newly established Taraba State University of Tropical Agriculture, Science, Technology and Climate Action, Gembu, as the 69th state-owned university and the 313th university in Nigeria. The announcement was made by the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, at a recognition ceremony attended by Gov. Agbu Kefas of Taraba, government officials, and stakeholders.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Prof. Ribadu emphasised that the creation of the university underscores the Taraba Government’s commitment to enhancing access to higher education while leveraging the state’s agricultural and environmental strengths. He pointed out that agriculture is crucial for Nigeria’s future, especially in tackling food security challenges and boosting productivity amid climate change effects.

Prof. Ribadu noted that the decision to establish a university focusing on agriculture, science, technology, and climate action reflects an understanding of the country’s challenges. He highlighted the unique combination of climate and agricultural potential on the Mambilla Plateau, which offers exceptional opportunities for practical teaching and research, making it an ideal location for a specialised institution.

He clarified that while the university has been recognised, it has not yet received approval to commence academic activities. The institution must first undergo resource verification by the NUC to ensure the availability of required human and material resources before admitting students. He also mentioned the necessity of establishing governance structures, including appointing principal officers and constituting a governing council.

Prof. Ribadu urged the Taraba Government to provide sustainable funding for both the new university and the existing Taraba State University, noting that financial commitments should endure beyond the administrations that establish them. He advised stakeholders to promote a culture of excellence from the institution’s inception.

In response, Gov. Kefas expressed gratitude to the NUC for facilitating the recognition process and committed to fulfilling all requirements for the start of academic activities. He reiterated that education is a top priority for his administration and described the new university as a strategic investment to boost education, tourism, agriculture, and economic development on the Mambilla Plateau.

Gov. Kefas stated that the university would serve not only Taraba residents but also attract students from across Nigeria and neighbouring countries, particularly Cameroon. He assured the NUC of adequate funding for the university and pledged to strengthen collaborations with local and international partners for its success. Additionally, he mentioned the possibility of reviewing the university’s name for brevity and manageability, emphasizing that investment in education is central to Taraba’s development agenda.
