Lagos: President Bola Tinubu emphasized the immense tourism potential inherent in Nigeria’s diverse culture and traditions, advocating for their use as vital tools for destination promotion. The president made these remarks during the Grand Finale of the week-long 2025 Eyo Festival held at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the president expressed that the festival serves as a reminder of Nigeria’s cultural assets, which can be leveraged as valuable resources for promoting destinations. He noted that the sight of white-robed figures parading the streets reflects Nigeria’s identity and its rich cultural heritage. Attending the festival adorned in a traditional white robe, damask sash, and a star-studded hat while carrying the opambata staff, Tinubu highlighted the importance of the event.
The festival kicked off with a homage paid to the President at his Lagos residence on Sunday, Dec. 21, ahead of the grand finale. The 2025 Eyo Festival marked the first occurrence of the event in eight years, dating back to its inception in 1854. This year’s edition honored four notable Lagos personalities: former Military Administrator Mobolaji Johnson, former civilian governor Lateef Jakande, former governor Michael Otedola, and Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji.
Tinubu described the Eyo Festival as a vibrant expression of Lagos’ rich traditions and a celebration of the exemplary lives and contributions of distinguished Nigerians. He noted that the festival coincided with “Detty December,” a period when Lagos welcomes Nigerians in the diaspora and foreign visitors, urging participants to celebrate peacefully and prioritize safety.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State described the event as both historic and a cultural homecoming for the President, emphasizing its significance in Lagos’ cultural history. He praised traditional institutions under the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, for their role in reviving the festival and assured that his administration would continue to promote Lagos’ socio-economic growth while preserving its cultural heritage.
The event was attended by dignitaries including Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, diplomats, and senior government officials.
