Abuja: Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesome Wike, has announced that the FCT Administration (FCTA) is set to remodel the Life Camp Recreation Park, located near the minister’s official residence, to meet global standards appropriate for a nation’s capital. This announcement followed his visit to the site after discussions with the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the decision aligns with the commendation received from the first lady for the FCTA’s engagement in the Green Nigeria Challenge under her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). The administration’s efforts to transform green spaces into recreational areas have been acknowledged, further motivating the initiative to enhance the park’s infrastructure.
Wike highlighted the transformation of the Abuja City Gate as an example of successful urban renovation, which was inaugurated on July 9 and has since become a popular recreational site. The green award from the first lady serves as an impetus for the administration to continue its efforts in improving recreational facilities across the city.
During his visit, Wike expressed disappointment over the neglect of the Life Camp site by previous administrations and emphasized the importance of revitalizing the area. He revealed plans to collaborate with reputable companies, including Julius Berger, to develop alternative designs for the park’s renovation, ensuring a competitive and quality outcome.
The minister also praised the first lady’s role in promoting recreational spaces and stressed the importance of providing modern facilities to encourage sporting activities, relaxation, and social interaction among residents. The FCTA is keen on delivering the project within a year under emergency conditions to expedite the park’s transformation.
Wike further announced plans to use the remodeled city gate for the country’s first official New Year countdown event, complete with fireworks, facilitated by the first lady. This initiative aims to reflect practices in developed countries and enhance the capital’s cultural activities.
The minister reiterated the administration’s dedication to restoring public confidence under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership. The first lady’s commendation of Wike’s efforts in transforming the Abuja City Gate into a landmark underscores the FCTA’s commitment to environmental and recreational advancements, urging other states to follow suit in engaging youth in environmental protection programs.
