Abuja: The Federal Government has commended the establishment of a climate-smart Electric Vehicle (EV) Recharge Hub, calling it a strategic initiative to support Nigeria’s commitments ahead of COP-30 in 2025.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi, Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), praised BYD Motors Nigeria and its partners for launching the electric vehicle recharge hub. She emphasized the importance of private-sector leadership in climate action.
Majekodunmi, represented by Jummai Vandu, a Climate Change Specialist at NCCC, stated the initiative exemplifies the collaboration and private-sector leadership necessary to accelerate Nigeria’s transition towards low-carbon, sustainable, and resilient transportation systems. “This facility is a tangible, strategic step reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to climate action, aligning with COP-30 momentum in Bel©m, Brazil,” she said.
She further explained that the recharge hub supports Nigeria’s transition to low-emission transport systems and contributes to the Global Transport Effort, which aims to reduce energy demand and integrate renewable energy efficiently into mobility solutions. Additionally, it aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by promoting green industrialization, creating ‘green jobs,’ and building resilience into Nigeria’s infrastructure.
The NCCC reiterated its commitment to continued collaboration with BYD Motors Nigeria to strengthen the country’s leadership in Africa’s low-carbon, resilient mobility sector in the coming years. Majekodunmi praised BYD Nigeria for its sector-specific intervention in transportation, highlighting its alignment with national climate and sustainability priorities.
Chief Moses Ayom, CEO and Chairman of Haitong International Nigeria Ltd and Vice Chair of BYD Nigeria, highlighted a two-day post-COP-30 follow-up event organized by BYD, Haitong, and the Grassroots Centre for Rights and Civic Orientation (GRACO). Ayom emphasized the importance of practical steps in climate action, stating that the Climate Smart Electric Vehicle Recharge Hub exemplifies their commitment to environmental sustainability.
Ayom noted the growing role of electric vehicles globally and stressed the importance of establishing infrastructure to support EV fleets in Nigeria. The climate-smart EV recharge hub offers a practical support system, enabling EV owners to fully charge their vehicles in just 40 minutes while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Furthermore, Ayom highlighted the hub’s role in creating jobs and serving as a training center for young Nigerians in EV maintenance, supporting the country’s sustainable mobility sector. He emphasized the significance of a just transition aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring climate action benefits all citizens.
Chief Route Commander Christopher Eya of the Federal Road Safety Corps also commended the initiative, acknowledging its potential to reduce automobile emissions and promote clean mobility for a greener environment in Nigeria.
