Abuja: The Federal Government has inaugurated the Core Working Group (CWG) on Regional Development in Nigeria, marking a significant step in operationalizing President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The President emphasized the importance of developing a policy framework that is practical and responsive to the varied needs of the regions, ensuring it is grounded in realism while instilling confidence among stakeholders.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Regional Development, Dr. Mariam Masha, expressed the presidency’s commitment and support to the CWG and the Federal Ministry of Regional Development (FMRD). Masha highlighted that the inauguration of the CWG signifies a shift from strategy to execution, emphasizing that regional development must be both nationally and regionally grounded and shared.
Dr. Mary Ogbe, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, underscored that regional development is crucial for reducing disparities, fostering social cohesion, and unlocking economic opportunities across Nigeria. The inauguration of the CWG establishes a dedicated team to design, coordinate, and implement key regional development initiatives and policies.
Ms. Wafaa Abdelatef, Country Representative for UNICEF Nigeria, described the inauguration as a significant step forward, promising a future of equity, resilience, and opportunities for Nigeria’s children. UNICEF, represented by Dr. Hamidou Poufon, expressed its support for the CWG, focusing on providing evidence, technical support, and capacity building for regional planning.
Mr. Mohammed Fall, United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, reminded the CWG that development is fundamentally about people and a commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that no one is left behind.
