Abuja: President Bola Tinubu has declared that his administration will not engage in negotiations with criminals, affirming that Nigeria will intensify intelligence-driven operations to combat terrorism, banditry, and other security threats.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the president made this statement on Thursday while hosting traditional rulers from Oyo State, led by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. During the meeting, Tinubu praised the armed forces for their roles in recent rescue operations and acknowledged the support of traditional rulers in bolstering security efforts. He expressed his intention to further relay the commendations to the armed forces personnel.
Tinubu highlighted that recent security challenges have spurred a reassessment of the country’s security framework and operational strategies. He emphasized that incidents, such as the Oyo school abduction, serve as lessons and catalysts for reviewing Nigeria’s security architecture and operational methods.
The President announced the Federal Government’s approval for expanding the Nigerian Army from eight to twelve divisions. This move aims to enhance response times and strengthen operational effectiveness in tackling terrorism and banditry. Tinubu firmly reiterated his administration’s stance against negotiating with criminal groups or meeting their demands, emphasizing that those involved in serious crimes must face justice.
Acknowledging the compounded security challenges due to instability in neighboring countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Republic, Tinubu detailed steps to bolster local security measures. These include strengthening forest guards and pursuing the establishment of state police with protective measures against abuse. He assured the traditional rulers that forest guards would be adequately equipped to confront criminal elements within national forests.
The President also underscored the significance of intelligence gathering and urged the traditional rulers to promote vigilance among their communities. He called on citizens to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activities or individuals.
Furthermore, Tinubu encouraged governors to utilize increased federal allocations for infrastructure and security-enhancing projects. He assured the delegation that security conditions were improving and pledged continued investment in security agencies to sustain this progress.
Earlier, Oba Rashidi Ladoja commended President Tinubu for his handling of the recent abduction incident in Oyo State, particularly appreciating the decision not to pay ransom. The traditional ruler urged the Federal Government to maintain security presence in forest reserves and continue infrastructure projects across Oyo State.
