Lagos: A former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Alhaji Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has called on public office holders to focus on delivering good governance and ensuring that Nigerians benefit from the dividends of democracy. Ikuforiji made this appeal during the fourth edition of an Iftar event organized for media practitioners in Lagos.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ikuforiji praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for implementing policies that are gradually improving governance and yielding positive economic outcomes. He encouraged Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s journey since independence and to address ongoing challenges that hinder development. Ikuforiji highlighted the necessity for leaders and citizens to continually assess government performance to enhance accountability and governance.
Furthermore, Ikuforiji emphasized the importance of reducing reliance on imported foods and increasing investment in agriculture. He called for public support for government policies aimed at establishing a stronger economic foundation. He pointed out that the misuse of petroleum revenues had inflated the naira without supporting sustainable economic growth and warned against the widespread issue of corruption that permeates various sectors of society.
Muslim scholar Ustaz Abdul-Hakeem Olapade, delivering a lecture titled “Islam and the Challenges of Good Governance,” stressed that good governance requires transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law. He urged leaders to administer public affairs with justice and integrity, noting that governance rooted in justice would bolster peace and stability nationwide.
Chief Imam of Crestland Estate Muslim Community, Imam Mutiu Orolu, also spoke at the event, highlighting the role of Muslims in nation-building. Orolu encouraged Muslims to actively engage in civic responsibilities and contribute to national development.
