Abuja: The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported the arrest of no fewer than 581,332 traffic violators across Nigeria for committing a total of 648,918 offences in 2025. This information was disclosed by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, during a news conference held on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mohammed highlighted a significant increase in enforcement activities compared to the previous year, 2024. He noted that the number of offenders apprehended rose from 453,304 in 2024 to 581,332 in 2025, marking an increase of 128,028 arrests, which corresponds to a 28.3 per cent rise. Additionally, the offences booked increased from 496,799 in 2024 to 648,918 in 2025, an increment of 152,119, amounting to a 30.6 per cent increase.
Mohammed attributed this upward trend to intensified patrol operations, improved surveillance, and a more robust enforcement strategy aimed at promoting road discipline and enhancing overall safety on Nigerian roads. He further explained the outcome of the operation zero tolerance activities, during which the corps arrested 29,317 traffic offenders for 33,190 offences nationwide between December 15, 2025, and January 15, 2026.
The number of offenders apprehended during this period rose from 28,170 in the 2024/2025 operation to 29,317 in 2025/2026, indicating a four per cent increase. The recorded offences also witnessed a rise from 31,829 to 33,190, representing a 4.2 per cent increase. Mohammed emphasized that, in response, the corps intensified deterrence through mobile court operations nationwide. This led to the arraignment of 1,276 offenders, with 1,105 violators convicted and 171 individuals either lawfully discharged or acquitted. He stated that this reflects a deliberate shift toward firm, fair, and visible enforcement as a behavioural control tool.
