Abuja: The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has sustained its enforcement and public enlightenment efforts to address the issue of lawlessness among commercial drivers who stop indiscriminately to pick up passengers, posing risks to pedestrians and other road users.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, highlighted this ongoing problem in an interview. Ogungbemide identified the arbitrary stopping by commercial drivers, especially during weekends, as a common traffic violation. He emphasized that this offence occurs daily, with offenders being regularly apprehended through continuous patrol operations across the nation.
The FRSC spokesman acknowledged the challenge of apprehending all offenders at once due to the widespread nature of the violation. Despite this, he assured that routine patrols are actively addressing the issue by apprehending offenders consistently.
Ogungbemide further explained that in addition to enforcement, the FRSC has been emphasizing public education to discourage unsafe practices among drivers and passengers. He stressed the importance of enlightening the public about the dangers of such practices, while enforcement remains ongoing.
The FRSC’s records indicate consistent daily apprehensions of traffic offenders, underscoring the sustained monitoring and enforcement actions being carried out nationwide. Creating obstructions on highways or within urban areas is prohibited under traffic regulations, and the FRSC is committed to continuing its enforcement measures to address these violations.
