Post: Fuel Price Increase Nigerian Government Promises Relief Amid Global Challenges

Abuja:The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has defended the recent hike in fuel prices, attributing the increase to a global trend of rising energy costs.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Idris addressed the issue during a media session with senior editors and journalists, emphasizing that nations worldwide are employing various strategies to mitigate the impact on their economies and citizens. He assured that the Nigerian government is aware of the financial strain on households and businesses due to higher energy costs.

Idris highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to economic reforms aimed at bolstering the nation’s economy while prioritizing the welfare of its citizens. The government’s strategy includes expanding affordable energy alternatives, enhancing domestic production, and fostering conditions for sustainable cost reductions in living expenses.

He detailed the achievements under the Renewed Hope Agenda, highlighting initiatives across eight presidential priority areas including economic growth, national security, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and industrial diversification. These priorities are part of a coordinated effort towards national transformation.

On security, Idris reassured that the government is relentless in its efforts to secure the nation, emphasizing investments in technology and personnel to ensure lasting security. He stressed the importance of Nigerians’ safety and the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable communities.

Regarding federalism, Idris noted that Nigeria’s three-tier government system is supported by President Tinubu, who has worked to strengthen state and local governments. This includes increasing fiscal transfers, advocating for local government autonomy, and proposing reforms in state police and electricity sectors.

Idris encouraged subnational governments to take more responsibility for essential public services and highlighted their progress, referencing a World Bank report showing a significant increase in states’ capital expenditure between 2023 and 2025. He concluded by urging the media to ensure accountability across all levels of government.
