Post: Historian Calls for Greater Recognition of Late Oba Erediauwa’s Intellectual Contributions

Benin City:A Nigerian historian, Professor Osarhieme Osadolor, has advocated for increased acknowledgment of the intellectual contributions of the late Oba of Benin, Oba Erediauwa.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Osadolor delivered this message during his keynote lecture at the pre-launch of the Oba Erediauwa Memorial Lecture Series hosted at the University of Benin. The lecture was part of the activities commemorating the 10th coronation anniversary of the current Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.

The historian emphasized the significance of the late Oba’s writings, public service, and dedication to Benin traditions, which he believes provide essential lessons in leadership and governance. Osadolor praised the late Oba as a philosopher king, embodying Plato’s ideals of leadership rooted in wisdom and a commitment to the public good.

Reflecting on Erediauwa’s life, the historian outlined his journey from education and public service to his role as the Oba of Benin, a position he held from March 1979 until his death in April 2016. Born as Prince Solomon Igbinoghodua Akenzua, Erediauwa was educated in law at the University of Cambridge before embarking on a public service career in Nigeria.

Osadolor highlighted Erediauwa’s literary works, such as his autobiography, “I Remain, Your Obedient Servant,” and “The Cradle of Ideas,” a collection of his speeches and writings. These works reflect a ruler who valued intellectual engagement and sought to harmonize traditional institutions with modern societal needs.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Edoba Omoregie, further highlighted the historical significance of Erediauwa’s contributions, noting that his writings provide valuable insights into Nigeria’s political landscape, including perspectives on the Nigerian Civil War.

In his remarks, Oba Ewuare II, represented by Professor Victor Igbineweka, emphasized the memorial lecture series as a means to honor his late father’s legacy and promote scholarship, good governance, and cultural preservation.

The formal inauguration of the lecture series is set for March 23, 2027, marking the anniversary of Erediauwa’s coronation. The event, which also included a cultural performance by the Inneh Theatre Troupe, was organized by a new committee following delays by a previous group.
