Abuja: A socio-political group, the Plateau Vanguard for Democracy (PVD), has lauded Sen. Simon Lalong for ceding the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau to Gov. Caleb Mutfwang. The Chairman of the group, Mr. Christopher Ishaku, made this known in a statement, describing the decision as a significant move in Plateau politics.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ishaku praised Lalong’s decision following the governor’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling it ‘altruistic and statesmanlike.’ This development marks a turning point in Plateau’s political landscape, particularly after the prolonged tension between the two leaders following the 2023 governorship election.
Lalong, who previously supported APC’s Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda as his successor, witnessed Mutfwang of the PDP emerge victorious. The rivalry resulting from this political contest has shaped the dynamics of opposition politics in Plateau. Ishaku noted that Lalong’s decision to relinquish party leadership to Mutfwang, despite their past differences, is a testament to his political maturity.
The move indicates Lalong’s readiness to prioritize the collective interest of Plateau over personal or factional concerns. Ishaku referred to the new political alignment as a unique opportunity for Plateau, emphasizing the strategic advantage of having major political stakeholders, such as Yilwatda as the National Chairman of the APC and Mutfwang as governor, united under the same party.
He called for unity among supporters of both Mutfwang and Lalong to safeguard Plateau’s political and developmental interests. Ishaku stressed that unity is urgently needed in light of increasing insecurity in parts of the state, urging leaders and citizens to unite against criminal elements threatening community stability.
Ishaku further asserted that sustained political stability would facilitate resource mobilization, enhance security coordination, and amplify Plateau’s concerns on a national level. He cautioned against actions that could reignite political divisions, advocating for a consolidated effort to maintain peace and progress in the state.
