Nicosia: Unidentified gunmen killed 14 people traveling in a vehicle returning from a weekly market in Bokkos, central Nigeria. The incident occurred around midday on Thursday and claimed the lives of women and children, as reported by local residents and a Red Cross official to AFP.
According to Deutsche Welle, Farmasum Fuddang, chair of the Bokkos cultural development forum, stated that the attackers intercepted the vehicle and opened fire on its passengers. “Victims included women and little babies,” Fuddang noted in a public statement.
The region has seen a sparse government presence, and ongoing conflicts have resulted in numerous fatalities over the years. Following the attack, there have been demands for enhanced security measures in the area.
After the initial attack on Thursday, a revenge attack resulted in the deaths of two more individuals. “Aggrieved youths have stormed a Fulani settlement close to the place where the ambush took place,” Shanono Usman, a local trader, informed AFP. Meanwhile, police in Plateau state have yet to comment on the incident.
