Abuja: The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Olatunji Disu, has issued a stern warning to newly promoted Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) regarding indiscipline, abuse of office, and dereliction of duty. This warning was delivered during a decoration ceremony held in Abuja for the newly promoted officers.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Disu emphasized that the newly promoted officers are no longer just senior officers but strategic leaders of the Nigeria Police Force. He stressed the importance of leading from the front, with actions and personal conduct that should reflect discipline, integrity, and a strict adherence to the rule of law. The I-G made it clear that there should be zero tolerance for indiscipline, abuse of office, corruption, or dereliction of duty within their commands.
Disu urged the senior officers to take full responsibility for the personnel under their supervision, ensuring firm and effective oversight. He highlighted that lax supervision leads to misconduct, while strong leadership enforces standards. The I-G stated that he would hold the officers accountable for both operational outcomes and the behavior of those under their authority.
The Inspector-General reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force, under his leadership, is committed to people-oriented policing as a core operational principle. He urged the officers to ensure that policing in their jurisdictions is driven by professionalism, respect for human rights, and responsiveness to public needs. Disu emphasized the importance of building trust with the public, as this enhances intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and effective law enforcement.
He also called on the officers to drive reforms within their areas of responsibility, embrace innovation, and enhance operational efficiency by eliminating outdated practices. Disu noted that the promotion of these senior officers was a result of a deliberate, merit-based process aimed at reinforcing professionalism, competence, and integrity within the Nigeria Police Force. He concluded by stating that the promotion was not merely a reward, but a responsibility that comes with demonstrated ability and years of service.
