Abuja: The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr. Olatunji Disu, has called for a new partnership model reflecting the realities of modern policing. This announcement was made during the closing ceremony of a week-long event in Abuja, celebrating the 42nd anniversary of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the I-G, represented by Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of Logistics and Supply, Mr. Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, emphasized the importance of deeper collaboration, smarter engagement, and stronger community participation for the future of national security. He stated that community trust and involvement are crucial for the success of any policing strategy, reform, or innovation.
Disu highlighted the need for renewed commitment to community engagement and continuous dialogue between the police and the public. He urged the PCRC to evolve continuously, embracing new ideas, technologies, and partnerships to align with modern policing realities.
He also mentioned that the 42nd anniversary of the PCRC is not only a moment of pride but also a call to action to strengthen the bonds sustaining the partnership for over four decades. It is a reminder to deepen the collective resolve to build a safer Nigeria and ensure a legacy of service that fosters peace, security, and shared prosperity.
The I-G reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to advancing community-oriented policing ideals, aiming to create a nation where every citizen feels safe, valued, and protected. He congratulated the PCRC leadership and members nationwide, hoping the anniversary inspires renewed energy and achievements in the coming years.
In his remarks, the National Chairman of the PCRC, Alhaji Ibraheem Olaniyan, described the anniversary as a milestone symbolizing years of resilience, unity, and shared commitment to the committee’s core values. Established 42 years ago by the Late Mr. Etim Inyang, a retired I-G, the PCRC began as a small unit with a vision to foster a harmonious relationship between the police and the community.
Olaniyan expressed pride in the journey so far, acknowledging the relentless efforts of founding members and current contributors who have transformed the PCRC into a formidable body. He noted the reactivation of dormant zonal offices and the reclamation of the National Secretariat Land under his leadership.
Furthermore, Olaniyan highlighted his administration’s efforts to award a contract for the PCRC national secretariat. The project aims to provide a suitable office space, subsidized accommodation for its members, and enhance revenue generation through proposed apartments.
