Abuja: The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, has resigned from office. Egbetokun, whose tenure was extended by one year in 2025 by President Bola Tinubu, tendered his resignation letter on Tuesday, citing personal family reasons.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the resignation was confirmed by Presidential spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, upon enquiries from journalists. Onanuga mentioned that a statement would be issued later in the day regarding this development. He emphasized that Egbetokun resigned voluntarily and was not removed from his position.
Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, and his appointment was confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023. Appointed at the age of 58, he was initially due for retirement on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, a recent amendment to the Police Act by the National Assembly allowed him to serve a full four-year term unless removed by the President.
