Abuja: The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Nigeria has condemned what it described as recent military attacks on Iran, citing concerns over international law and sovereignty. In a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, the embassy said the strikes occurred amid ongoing diplomatic engagements between Iran and the United States.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the embassy expressed that the timing of the attacks “raises serious questions about commitment to dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes.” The embassy highlighted that the reported strikes affected Iranian territory and civilian infrastructure, stating they were inconsistent with Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
The statement indicated that civilian locations, including a school in Minab, were impacted, resulting in casualties. The embassy emphasized that the operation also had implications for Iran’s political and security leadership, calling it “a serious matter affecting national sovereignty.”
The embassy further noted that these incidents were reported during Ramadan and ahead of Nowruz, periods it described as culturally and humanitarianly significant. It expressed heightened concern over actions taken during such sacred and culturally important periods.
From a legal standpoint, the embassy argued that the strikes lacked justification under international law and could undermine the global legal order. It reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to diplomacy and peaceful engagement, while also noting that international law recognises the right to self-defence.
