Abuja: The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna Road. Mr Mohammed Ahmed, Director, Information and Public Relations, Ministry of Works, disclosed this during a tour of the project sites. Ahmed emphasized the road’s strategic importance, noting that it connects the North Central and other Northern regions to the Federal Capital Territory and serves as a vital link between Lagos and other parts of Nigeria. To enhance durability and longevity, the government has opted to redesign the road using Continuous Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the government considered the road’s strategic importance, resolving to complete it with a focus on long-term serviceability. Engineer’s Representative Chukwuma Kalu provided technical updates, revealing the project is divided into two sections. Section one features a 40.5-kilometre dual carriageway CRCP stretch, amounting to a total of 81 kilometres, alongside a 17.3-kilometre asphalt section on the Kano-Zaria Road and a 6.63-kilometre dual asphalt overlay in Kano State.
Kalu reported that the 6.63-kilometre dual asphalt road leading to Kano Airport is finished and fitted with streetlights, while 80 per cent of the 17.3-kilometre asphalt section is completed. Sixty kilometres of the 81-kilometre CRCP stretch have also been delivered, with 21 kilometres remaining. He expressed confidence that this section would be completed by the end of April, noting that construction activities are ongoing around the clock to meet the deadline.
Senior Project Manager Robert Turner confirmed that the overall progress on Section One stands at approximately 80 per cent. Turner assured that teams are working day and night to minimize public inconvenience and ensure timely delivery of the project.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tour also included the inauguration of emergency intervention projects in Bwari and Lugbe. These projects involve limited rehabilitation of child care trust road, five adjoining roads in the FCT, and the construction of roads and drainage systems in flood-prone areas of CRD Lugbe and Winners Airport road in Lugbe and AMAC. Ms Grace Ike, chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, inaugurated the projects on behalf of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, highlighting their potential to ease congestion, reduce travel time, and create opportunities for economic development.
