Abuja: The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has ordered the arrest and prosecution of the owner of the two-story building that collapsed on Friday in Jikwoyi, Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the two-story building intended for a hotel was under construction when it collapsed, resulting in injuries to several workers. The Minister, who visited the site on Monday, announced the revocation of the 2,500 square meters of land allocated to the owner. He expressed gratitude that no lives were lost in the incident and emphasized that the construction was taking place without approval from Development Control.
The Minister highlighted that despite receiving a notice of discontinuance from Development Control, the owner proceeded with the construction. He stressed that the lack of formal approval meant there was no oversight on the quality of materials used.
Wike stated that the government would take over the plot and consult the community to determine a suitable public use for the land. He reiterated the importance of following proper procedures, advising landowners to obtain necessary approvals before commencing building projects.
He urged individuals to engage with the Development Control Department to ensure that their construction plans are approved and supervised. Wike emphasized the FCT Administration’s commitment to demolishing any unauthorized buildings and directed Development Control to continue its vigilance in preventing such incidents.
