Post: King Amakree Academy and GSS Gboko Triumph in Milo Basketball Championships


Obuama: King Amakree Academy, located in Obuama, Rivers, emerged victorious in the boys’ category of the 26th Nestl© Milo Secondary Schools Basketball Championship by defeating Father O’Connel Science College, Minna, with a close score of 56-54. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the final was a thrilling encounter, characterized by the exceptional skill and determination of both teams. King Amakree Academy narrowly led the opening quarter 15-14, but the defending champions from Father O’Connel Science College took charge in the subsequent quarters. They extended their lead to 31-25 by the end of the third quarter, maintaining a 47-39 advantage into the final period. However, King Amakree Academy mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter with aggressive defense and improved ball movement, tying the game at 54-54 with just two seconds left. A late foul provided King Amakree Academy with two crucial free throws, which they converted to secure a dramatic victory.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, the girls’ final saw Government Secondary School, Gboko, Benue, overpowering St. Judes Girls Secondary School, Amarata, Bayelsa, with a decisive 68-36 win. The Benue team showcased excellent teamwork and discipline, dominating the championship from start to finish. In the boys’ competition for third place, Davidhall International College, Ikoyi, Lagos, overcame Urhobo College, Effurun, Delta, with a score of 51-43. For the girls, Ado Grammar School, Ekiti State, claimed third place after a 40-30 victory over Urhobo College, Effurun, Delta.



The champions received a prize of ?3 million, along with basketballs and other sports equipment. The runners-up earned ?2 million, sports gear, and Nestl© Milo gift items. Third-place finishers were awarded ?1.5 million, sporting equipment, and Nestl© Milo products. Mrs. Olabisi Joseph, President of the Nigeria School Sports Federation, commended the championship for promoting the integration of education and sports. She highlighted the role of former Nigeria international basketball player, Olumide Oyedeji, in inspiring participants by emphasizing the importance of combining education with sports. Joseph also noted the cultural exhibition held during the event, which aimed to educate and entertain the youths about their culture.



Joseph expressed her excitement about the platform’s ability to produce well-rounded students who excel academically and athletically. She praised Nestl© Milo for its continued commitment to grassroots sports development, anticipating many successful future editions of the championship.
