Post: TCN Sets Up Committee to Review New Tax Law Impact on Staff Salaries

Abuja: The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has established a committee to assess the impact of the new Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax law on staff salaries. The committee’s mandate is to analyze the law’s implications and recommend strategies to protect staff interests while ensuring compliance.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Chuks Ochijie, Executive Director of Finance and Accounts at TCN, made this announcement during a sensitization program in Abuja. The event aimed to educate staff on the new tax law’s specifics and its effects on salary administration. The program, themed “New Tax Laws Governing PAYE and Staff Salary Administration Effective January,” highlighted the necessity of understanding the law due to its direct implications.

Ochijie emphasized that tax compliance is a governance obligation and a statutory responsibility, not merely a financial issue. He warned that misunderstanding or mismanagement of PAYE could lead to disputes, penalties, and unnecessary anxiety. However, he reassured staff that the sensitization was to clarify misconceptions and explain legal positions while ensuring compliance with tax laws.

The program, supported by the FCT Internal Revenue Service, was designed to provide technical depth and align guidance with tax authorities. Ochijie encouraged staff participation to manage the law’s impact and avoid compliance risks.

TCN’s Managing Director, Mr. Sule Abdulaziz, represented by Mrs. Biodun Afolabi-Fadahunsi, highlighted the session’s timeliness and importance. He stated that staying informed about evolving tax policies is crucial for compliance and sound financial decisions.

Ms. Fatima Abubakar from the FCT IRS explained that the Nigerian Tax Administration Act 2026, effective January 1, aims to standardize processes and reduce taxpayer burdens. She urged staff to understand their obligations and rights under the new law.

The committee, chaired by Mr. Emenogu Chidi, Assistant General Manager, Audit Field TCN, includes representatives from various departments and unions. The team is tasked with implementing the new tax laws beneficially for both the government and TCN staff.
