Abuja: A former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, paid tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighting his integrity, compassion, and patriotism. This tribute took place in Abuja during a programme commemorating the first anniversary of Buhari’s death.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mohammed praised Buhari’s legacy, citing his integrity, humility, patriotism, humanity, and confidence in those who served under him. He noted that Buhari’s distinguished career spanned both military and democratic leadership, culminating in two terms as Nigeria’s democratically elected president. Mohammed recounted instances of Buhari’s concern for his welfare during his tenure as government spokesman and highlighted Buhari’s immediate approval of a 2015 media tour of liberated communities in Borno as a demonstration of trust.
Lai Mohammed shared how Buhari dismissed allegations against him after a discreet investigation cleared him of any wrongdoing, defending his performance before the Federal Executive Council. He also portrayed Buhari as a staunch supporter of Nigeria’s unity, emphasizing his commitment to the country’s indivisibility throughout his leadership roles. Mohammed’s portrayal of Buhari contradicted his public image as a stern military officer, instead describing him as warm, humble, and humorous.
The former minister elaborated on Buhari’s patience, fairness, and willingness to assist others, including former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, as evidence of his compassion. Mohammed shared that their relationship extended beyond Buhari’s presidency, with regular visits to his residences in Daura and Kaduna. He concluded by praying for Allah to forgive Buhari’s shortcomings, grant him Aljannah Firdaus, comfort his family, and bless Nigeria with peace, unity, and prosperity.
Muhammadu Buhari passed away in a London hospital on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82, following a prolonged illness. His death led to nationwide mourning and tributes to his extensive public service. He was laid to rest on July 15, 2025, at his residence in Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites and with full military honours, attended by President Bola Tinubu and other dignitaries.
