Post: LOTUS Bank and Heckerbella Launch Smart Identity and Digital Payment Card at UNILAG

Lagos: LOTUS Bank, in collaboration with Heckerbella, has unveiled a new smart identity and digital payment card at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). The initiative introduces an identification system that integrates campus ID with secure debit card features, as highlighted by Dr. Isiaka Ajani-Lawal, the Managing Director of LOTUS Bank.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ajani-Lawal emphasized that this initiative aligns with the bank’s commitment to advancing financial inclusion and providing integrated, secure digital banking solutions tailored for institutional environments. The Smart ID Project is a collaborative effort that combines identity management, access control, and financial services into a single secure platform. This partnership with UNILAG and Heckerbella aims to enhance convenience, strengthen security, and facilitate the transition towards a modern, cashless campus.

The Smart ID Card is designed to serve dual functions: as the university’s official identification credential and as a secure debit card powered by LOTUS Bank. This innovation allows for seamless identity verification, efficient access control, and safe financial transactions both within and outside the campus. The initiative is expected to streamline administrative processes, improve operational efficiency across faculties and departments, and promote financial literacy and inclusion among students. With its embedded debit functionality, the card supports secure, cashless transactions while reinforcing the university’s move towards a technology-driven academic ecosystem.

As the technology and implementation partner, Heckerbella is responsible for comprehensive data capture for students and staff, as well as the secure production and issuance of the Smart ID Cards. The process is designed to ensure data accuracy, robust security standards, and operational efficiency throughout the deployment.

The launch ceremony was attended by the university’s leadership, faculty members, students, senior executives from LOTUS Bank and Heckerbella, and key stakeholders. During the event, Vice Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola formally presented the Smart ID Cards to students and staff, marking a significant milestone in UNILAG’s digital transformation journey. In her remarks, the vice chancellor reaffirmed the university’s commitment to innovation and strategic partnerships that enhance service delivery and elevate the overall campus experience.

Speaking at the card unveiling, Ms. Yemi Keri, Managing Director of Heckerbella, highlighted the importance of secure identity infrastructure in modern institutions. She noted that her firm’s collaboration with LOTUS Bank on this project demonstrates how technology, banking, and education can converge to deliver practical, future-focused solutions.
